  • A Message from Principal Shawna Rodriguez:
In response to some messages I have received regarding concerns stemming from an optional assembly that took place this past week, I wanted to provide you with some information and establish the standard by which we operate and are expected to adhere to in classrooms, assemblies and on campus.

As educators, one of the many jobs we are responsible for is sharing information in an unbiased, non-partisan manner. We never seek nor intend to “indoctrinate” students into a particular belief or way of thinking. Instead, we seek to provide information to students that will promote critical thinking, allow for reflection and promote an exchange of ideas.

One of our fundamental principles is that we welcome all students, and we strive to ensure that all students know they are welcome at Tucson High Magnet School. We also ensure they know each student’s opinions, beliefs and feelings are as valid as every other student’s. Because we pride ourselves in diversity, the annual Fine and Performing Arts assembly includes our mariachi and folklorico students celebrating the independence of Mexico through dance and music. It also serves as a means of expression highlighting the culture and artistic talents of our students. This was at the center of the assembly. The statements made at the assembly were made by a guest speaker and were not made by a staff member of Tucson Unified School District. In no way, were the statements a reflection or representation of the views of Tucson Unified School District or the administration and staff at Tucson High Magnet School.

If the information that was shared left your student feeling isolated or upset, I apologize. That was never the intent. We simply wanted to let students know that we will continue to support students--all students--in their educational growth.

In the future, Tucson High’s administration will ensure that all appropriate measures for assemblies, particularly those with guest speakers, are non-partisan, maintain a non-sectarian standard and adhere to all relevant Governing Board policies.
What Makes Us Special

Tucson High is a magnet school with programs in natural sciences and visual and performing arts. We have an active relationship with nearby University of Arizona. Some classes are taught by university professors, and some science classes visit the university for authentic learning experiences.

We are the district’s oldest high school; our halls are steeped in history, and we boast of a strong sense of community pride, with alumni supporting the school and sporting Badger red and white.

In addition to the magnet programs, we offer career and technical instruction including classes in welding, auto mechanics, digital media and more. We provide varied interscholastic programs and clubs for just about every interest.
